Tip

This tutorial video outlines the basic steps for creating multi-zone presentations.

In a multi-zone presentation, BrightAuthor divides the screen into rectangles called zones, allowing you to create a different playlist for each zone. BrightAuthor provides a number of multi-zone templates. You can choose one of the system templates or create your own (see the Customizing Zone Layouts page for more details). You can also edit the zone layout at any time after selecting a template.

In multi-zone presentations, the zone type restricts the media and state types that can be included in the zone. The color-coded key at the bottom of the Template window shows the available zone types. The following list describes the available content types for each zone type:

Video Zone Restrictions

On Series 4 and earlier players, BrightSign XT, 4K, and XD models can decode two videos simultaneously, while HD and LS models can only decode a single video (this count can be expanded using Mosaic Mode). Also, the Background Image zone uses a video decoder to display an image. This leads to the following zone restrictions:

Note

If you enable Dolby Vision on the XTx44, the presentation can only contain a single video-enabled zone (Video Only, Video or Images, or Background Image).

Creating a New Project

To create a new multi-zone presentation, navigate to File > New Presentation.

Main

Note

You can output a composite signal to a converter by selecting the "HDMI" or "Component" Connector type and choosing one of the available composite video modes. See this FAQ for more information on generating component and composite signals.

Note

Choosing a portrait mode will rotate all images, videos, and HTML. However, for HDx20 and LSx22 models, content is not rotated on the player. Instead, you will need to rotate video or images in the source application (e.g. Photoshop, Adobe After Effects) before publishing them to the player.

Advanced

Overscan is necessary with some older television screens that cut off content at the edges of the screen.

Click Create when you are finished configuring the presentation. The Template window will open.

Selecting a Template

Use the View dropdown list to choose between "System Templates" and "User Defined Templates" (see the Customizing Zone Layouts section to learn more about creating User Defined Templates). Select a multi-zone template you wish to use and click Choose—Remember that you can edit the zone layout at any time after choosing a template.

Adding Content to Zones

To add content to your zones, first designate a folder on your computer as your Media Library. This will make it easy to drag and drop image, video, and audio files into a zone playlist from a scrollable list of thumbnails.

  1. Under Media Library, select the files tab.

  2. Click to open the file browser.

  3. Navigate to the folder where your content is stored.

  4. Click OK.

Note

Note: If your content folder contains large files, it may take a while for the thumbnail images to appear.

Use the dropdown menu under Zone to select a zone, then add media files to the zone by dragging files from the Media Library to the playlist area. You can do the following when adding media files:

Tip

You can also drag and drop media files directly into the playlist from a Windows Explorer window.

Editing the Zone Playlist

Once you've added media files to a zone, you can modify it by doing any of the following:

Editing Media Playback Options

To edit the playback settings of a media item, double-click the thumbnail in the playlist area (or right-click and select Edit), then choose the settings you want to apply to the selected item:

To edit settings for multiple items, press the Ctrl key and select items in the playlist. On the menu bar, select Edit > Selected Items, and then choose the settings you want to apply to the selected items. Note that the selected items must all be the same media or state type for this to work.

Next Steps

Now that you've created your multi-zone presentation, save it by navigating to File > Save [project name] (make sure you have the Edit tab selected). Then, do any of the following:
