This document describes how to update BrightSignOS and the MOKA firmware on the MOKA TV with BrightSign built-in.

Prerequisites

MOKA TV with:

  • MOKA firmware version: V8-AM963BS-0020015 or later

  • BrightSignOS (currently installed version): 9.0.159 or later

Updating BrightSignOS and MOKA Firmware

Follow the steps below to update BrightSignOS and the MOKA firmware.

  1. Connect the MOKA TV to a LAN (Local Area Network) using an Ethernet cable. Power on the MOKA TV.

  2. Determine the system’s IP address and the BrightSign serial number:

    1. Boot up the MOKA TV without a microSD card. The microSD slot is located on the bottom face of the TV next to the Power button.

    2. Wait for the MOKA TV to boot up completely which may take up to several minutes. When the boot up is complete, the system will display the BrightSign splash screen.

    3. Within a few seconds of the splash screen appearing, the system’s IP address and BrightSign serial number will be displayed along with a message that reads, "Please insert storage device."

  3. Write down the IP address and BrightSign serial number.

  4. Install the microSD card, taking care to insert the card in the proper orientation as shown by the graphic next to the microSD card slot.

  5. Connect your computer to a LAN on the same subnet as the MOKA TV.

  6. The system’s LDWS (Local Diagnostic Web Server) enables access to various settings and functions. To access the LDWS:

    1. Using a web browser, navigate to http://{player-ip} where {player-ip} is the IP address that was previously written down.

    2. At the authentication prompt, enter the requested username and password as follows:

      1. username: admin

      2. password: the BrightSign serial number

    3. Upon authenticating, you will be presented with the system’s LDWS.

  7. Go to the SD tab of the LDWS.

  8. Under Upload Files, upload the desired version of the BrightSignOS .bsfw file, available at https://www.brightsign.biz/resources/software-downloads/ (HS5 software family)

  9. Wait until the upload finishes which may take up to several minutes.

  10. Go to the Control tab of the LDWS.

  11. Click on Reboot and then OK on the confirmation dialog to begin the BrightSignOS update process.

  12. The system will reboot to complete the update process. After the system boots back up, go to the LDWS and refresh the browser window.

  13. The LDWS should now have a Display tab. Click on it.

  14. Under the Display Firmware Update section, use the File Upload option to upload the MOKA firmware .zip file, available from BrightSign here.

  15. Click Update.

  16. The system will show a success message, which indicates that the firmware update process has begun.

  17. A series of reboots may occur while the MOKA firmware is being updated. Make sure that power remains connected throughout this process.

  18. Once the process is complete and the system has completely booted back up, you can confirm that the MOKA firmware has been updated by checking the Software Version under the System > About section of the display. The Display Firmware version can also be found in the Local DWS > Display tab.

Always Connected

It is highly recommended to enable the Always Connected option to ensure that the MOKA TV is remotely accessible.

There are two ways to do this:

  1. Using the MOKA TV’s IR remote

    1. Click the Settings button (gear icon) on the remote control.

    2. Navigate to System > Power.

    3. Enable Always Connected.

  2. Using the LDWS

    1. Go to the Local DWS > Display tab.

    2. Enable the Always Connected option and click Update.
