User Account Roles

A user account may be associated with one of six roles: Administrators, Creators, General Managers, Network Managers, Publishers, or Viewers. These roles determine what you can view, edit, create, and delete within the WebUI (along with components of BrightAuthor that are applicable to the BrightSign Network). Each role has a specific set of permissions, and you can move a user from one role to another, based on which tasks you want them to perform. If you want to grant a user full access, you can assign him/her to the Administrator role.

In this document, most section titles include subtitles that let you know which user account roles may perform actions in that section. Note that Administrators can perform all possible actions in the WebUI.

Administrators

Being assigned to the Administrators role gives you access to all the features offered on the BrightSign Network. This is the only role that allows you to edit the account status of other users: as an Administrator, you can add new users, delete existing users, and assign users to different roles. You can also create and edit Custom Roles on the Account Customization page.

The first user of a BrightSign Network account will automatically be assigned to the Administrators role. If you are not the first user on your account, you will need to have an Administrator assign you this role.

Creators

The Creators role gives you complete control of content, including presentations, Dynamic Playlists, Live Text feeds, and Live Media feeds. You do not have the ability to view or change schedules, groups, or devices. This role is best suited for those tasked solely with creating presentation content for BrightSign players.

General Managers

The General Managers role gives you full control of content creation and distribution. The only permissions you don’t have are the advanced user and account features that are unique to Administrators.

Network Managers

The Network Managers role gives you control of the digital-signage infrastructure: you can add, remove, maintain, and group together networked BrightSign players. In addition, you can view and delete (but not add or edit) certain kinds of content such as Dynamic Playlists, Live Text feeds, Live Media feeds, and presentations.

Publishers

The Publishers role allows you to schedule when and where BrightSign presentations will be played. You also have the ability to upload content. Otherwise, you do not have access to content that is uploaded to the BrightSign Network account.

Viewers

If you are assigned to the Viewers role, you can view almost all aspects of a digital-signage system: content, groups, device statuses, and schedules. However, you cannot affect anything on the BrightSign Network account.

Permissions

You can view the exact permissions of each role in the Settings > Permissions page in the WebUI. Below Operations, the features are divided into categories. Click the arrow beside a category to view all the tasks within it. Click a particular task, and refer to the list of roles below Permissions for.

The bullets beside each role will adjust when you click a task to indicate whether the role can perform that task. If permitted, the bullet will appear beneath Allow. If restricted, it will appear below Deny.

Creating a New User

To create a User, navigate to the Users and Roles page in the WebUI. In the right portion of the screen, click Create New User and enter the User account information (including the role).

Editing Roles

You can also change the roles associated with users in the Users and Roles page. Determine which role you want to change a user to, and click its name below Roles in the left portion of the screen. All users currently assigned to that role will be displayed below Assigned Users. To add a user to the role, click the user account from the Users List and drag it to Assigned Users.

If you want to disable or delete a user, click the properties for a User under the Users List. You can Delete or Disable the user account in the Properties window.
